Europa Cup 2016 – Benfica beat Trojans again!

Trojans Korfball Club were beaten 18-15 at the Europa Cup by Portuguese champions, NC Benfica on Thursday, 14 January 2016.

 

At their last meeting at Europa Cup 2014 Benfica won 15-8.

 

Johnny NICKERSON, David BROOKS and Tony WOODVINE top scored for Trojans with three goals each. Amy TURNER again top scored for Trojans’ females.

 

Benfica’s Pedro Amaro Correia top scored in the match with five goals.

 

Trojans were chasing the match until the 28th minute when Tony WOODVINE scored his fourth of the game from a free-pass to level the scores at 10-10.

 

Benfica hit back almost immediately with two open play goals to restore their 2 goal advantage.

 

Four unanswered goals from Trojans put the team from Croydon, South London ahead for the first time in the match.

 

Unbelievably the English champions scored just one more goal in the last 16 minutes of the match. Benfica scored six.

 

Speaking after the match Trojans player/ coach Johan Oosterling said: “Congratulations to Benfica for beating us in a very entertaining match today, we’re all gutted and disappointed as we really believed we could do it this year.

 

The result means that the highest Trojans can now finish is 5th. Trojans next match at the Europa Cup 2016 is against Marmara University Sports Club.
