Europa Shield 2016: Bec beaten 14-13 in the Final

Bec Korfball Club were unable to repeat their success of 2015 after they were defeated by Barcelona KC 14-13 in the final of the Europa Shield on Sunday, 24 January 2016.

 

Dave Buckland, Head Coach of Bec said after the match: “Barcelona on the day were the better team. Both teams were nervous at the start but then they opened up a 3 goal advantage.

 

“Second half I made changes resulting in a positive effect. We were five goals down with just five minutes remaining in the match – the momentum had swung in our favour but we just run out of time.

 

“I’m very proud of the players having to play two games a day.

 

“All the games at the Europa Shield are close and that is what we came here for.

 

“Gold would have been great but it wasn’t to be this year. BEC has once again done English korfball proud.

 

“We will come back to the National league very positively a continue to work hard each week.”

 

Joe Bedford who scored four goals in the final said: “Silver medallists at the Europa Shield 2016. So close to defending the title but unfortunately it wasn’t to be our year.

 

“Congratulations Barcelona KC on the gold.”

 

Bec are currently leading the England Korfball League with a maximum of 12 points. Their next match is against Tornadoes from Kent on Sunday, 31 January.

 

The referee for the Europa Shield final was Marcel Luttik (Netherlands).
