Haven Sports Korfball League 2009/10

Playoffs

Regular Season

Bec

In coming 6th last year, Bec were disappointed with their performance in the league and under new coaches Donald Forrester and Danny Miles the team are serious about being top 3 and securing a place in European competition. Bec maintains its core unit of players who are getting better and better each year, led by captain Davesh Patel. So despite the loss of injured Czech star Jana Herglova, its going to be an exciting year for this Bec team, bolstered by the transfer of the seasoned England player Karen Sparrow.

Kingfisher

Kingfishers are a team that have been progressing for years and having now established themselves in this league, are a real threat to the top teams. Narrowly missing out on a top 4 playoff position last year, Kingfishers will be aiming above and beyond that this year, and will be challenging every single team in the league. With scoring threats from all over the pitch and young, talented players with the will to win (like Sammi Bedford and Hidde de Jager) there may be little that can stop Kingfishers from a medal-winning position.

Kwiek

Kwiek impressed last season, coming second in the league overall and showing real consistency and dominance in a team which consists mainly of young international players. The team remains largely unchanged this season, but for the departure of high-scoring James Woolmer and player/coach Steve Green. However, with the scoring power of Luke and Charmagne Francis amongst many others, the team will be looking to win all the way.

Mitcham

Mitcham were disappointed with their 3rd place finish last year, after finishing top of the table at the end of the regular season. Some established players have left the Club (Aimee Evans, Karen Sparrow, Carly Holness, Ella Wright), but joiners Ben King and Helen West add exciting talent to this Mitcham team which has a notorious will to win. With Dave Synott concentrating on coaching rather than playing, this season sees a new-look Mitcham aiming for the top of the table.

Nomads

Having won back their place, Nomads have returned to the top league full of fire and determination to succeed. Their team combines the likes of talented youth players Joe Olds and Emma and Simon Cole with the experience of Ana Osbourne and Steve Green – recently transferred back to his old club from Kwiek. Coach Jackie Phillimore will be looking for this team to gain a top 4 spot.

Norwich Knights

After few wins last season, Norwich Knights beat off challengers from all over the country to deservedly keep their place in the league and are looking to improve upon last year’s performance. Knights players now have more experience in the top league; Stephanie Allen and Heather Lymburn have gained international experience, so despite losing top scorer Charlie Vogwill, this team has exciting korfball to offer and will threaten to beat any team on the day with their mental and physical prowess.

Nottingham

Nottingham have been a challenger to the title for many years, but have never made it to the top, coming 4th last season. This season they lose top scorer Joe Bedford (playing for TOP in the Netherlands) but gain the young internationals Charlie Vogwill (transferred from rivals Norwich Knights) and Natasha Dawson (back from a year playing in the Netherlands). Put these players alongside the regular players of many seasons, including international experience from Hannah Lorrimer, Alistair Knight and Rob Mann, and the team will always be a top-level threat.

Trojans

Trojans players make scoring look deceptively easy, led from the front by the Brooks brothers, David, Sam and Matthew. Trojans won the double last year – deserving champions of both the league and cup. This year they will be planning to do exactly the same - with incredible talent and depth in this squad it’ll be a real challenge for any other team to stop this team of korfball stars achieving their goal.
