Champions Trophy

Champions Trophy

Background

The Champions Trophy was conceived in 2009 as an exciting end to the season for England's top teams playing at local level to gain entry to the prestigious Haven Sports Korfball League. These teams compete in their local area with the top teams at the end of the seaons eligible to compete in the Champions Trophy.

Here they compete with the bottom two teams for the Haven Sports Korfball League for the right to play next season in England Korfball's flagship competition.

History

Champions Trophy 2010/11

Kent supplied both teams for the "final" as the organisers got the fixtures spor on. Bearsted and Tournadoes fought out a fiercely contested match which see-sawed from Tornadoes leading by a large margin to being drawn back in again several times. They hung on to win the Champions Trophy and both sides celebrated being invited back into Top level National League Korfball for 2011/2012

Croydon were the only club with a vested interest in the last match needing Bearsted to lose heavily. The nature of the game kept them on the edge of their seats until the last few minutes when they had closed the gap enough to disappoint Croydon.

Champions Trophy 2009/10

The 2009/2010 Champions Trophy saw the introduction of a 10 team Haven Sports Korfball League and hence 4 places available for the top finishing teams in the competition. With many people fearing that teams will be coming up into a league to strong for them.

This was proved not to be the case as none of the teams involved went away without a loss. This includes a 5th place Manchester beating top places Kingfisher and last pace Leeds beating second place Invicta Sharks.

A great tournament for EnglandKorball and all the teams involved. Kingfisher and Norwich Knights maintain their HSKL status and are joined at England Korfball's top table by two Kent sides Invicta Sharks and Tornadoes.

Champions Trophy 2008/09

The inaugural Champions Trophy was won by Norwich Knights who also retained their Premier League status. They defeated Nomads in the most exciting match of the weekend.

Both sides secure places in the premier league in season 2009/10 as Nomads leapfrog Croydon after just one year in the lower division.
